The Office Experience Organization (OXO) in IDC is looking for an experienced Group Engineering Manager to run the Web Experiences and Services Team. The team creates shared experiences, high-scale geo-distributed services and engineering systems to enable them. These services and experiences are behind the Office Web applications like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Visio that are part of the Office 365 suite.

As Group Engineering Manager, you will be directly leading a team of 50+ engineers and be part of the broader Office Shared Leadership team. Along with the other Office Shared partner team leaders, you will be responsible for the Office strategy for service-based web productivity, shared experiences and engineering systems.

This team is at the center of the Office strategy for service-based web productivity. Working together with partners across Office (such as Excel, OneNote, PowerPoint, Word, Visio) and other divisions of Microsoft, we are building and delivering the best-in-class Office Web applications that expand the reach of traditional Office client apps by supporting a wide range of browsers and platforms and ensuring that the engineering systems for web-development on top of Typescript/React can support the scale of thousands of engineers contributing to the web.

The team helps design, build and run all aspects of the shared high scale services including monitoring, scalability and reliability. We are gearing up to modernize our infrastructure services to achieve world class scalability and reliability. We seek to build on the site reliability principles to understand distributed systems and high-scale services.

Responsibilities

As a Group Engineering Manager of the team, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Driving the strategy, vision, and execution for the team in collaboration with the Office Shared Leadership team - compromised of engineering, design and program management leaders.
  • Partner with other Office Shared and web application teams to deliver on the shared services, experiences and engineering systems for Office on Web.
  • Coach team leaders and engineers within the team
  • Actively shape and drive a flexible, diverse, and inclusive culture where everyone is enabled to be at their best

Qualifications

Required Qualifications :

  • 12+ years as a software developer, including 5+ years working on cloud services.
  • 5+ years leading engineering teams shipping and deploying product to customers in real world environments.
  • A passion for software engineering tooling, platforms and infrastructure.
  • Experience managing medium-sized teams of 30+ engineers.
  • Experience working across disciplines and teams.
  • A passion for leading diverse, inclusive engineering organization.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a solid understanding of the entire software development lifecycle.
  • Experience with Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment workflows and tools.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with any of the following engineering areas: performance, security, privacy, reliability, accessibility, localization/globalization.
  • Deep technical understanding - proven ability to develop successful long-term code/service architectures.
  • Experience being the most senior technical leader on a project, making decisions without higher level validation.
  • Excellent understanding of testing methodologies and practices.
  • Experience improving processes vertically and horizontally.
  • Experience in Azure DevOps.
  • Strong customer advocate.
  • A systematic problem solver who quickly ramps up, understand complex problems, and create solutions that cross many services
